Are Mixer Showers The Right Choice For Your Bathroom?
Before making a decision as to which type of shower you have installed it will be beneficial to know the advantages and potential disadvantages which may help you make a better choice.
Electric showers:
These are dependent units which run off of the cold water mains supply. The water is heated as it runs through the element which is housed within the unit. This type of shower does not need a hot water feed, neither does it require a water tank. These showers are economical as they heat water on demand rather than relying on hot water from a boiler or tank. The only real disadvantage is that should you have a power cut you will only be able to have a cold shower!
Mixer showers:
These run off both the hot and cold water pipes and the water pressure which exists within your home. Therefore if you have a low water pressure having this type of shower will not make the water pressure any greater, which basically means if you only have a trickle of water due to low pressure the shower will produces the same!
These showers will also be affected by other water applications in your home, for example if someone in the kitchen turns the tap on or someone flushes the toilet in the downstairs cloakroom the water temperature and the pressure to the shower will be affected. In the past this was potentially dangerous as people could get scolded buy a sudden burst of extremely hot water or similarly be faced with a cold water rather than warm being sprayed onto their bodies, and whist this may in itself not be potentially dangerous the shock factor of suddenly experiencing a jet of cold water is not entirely desirable!
Now a days a mixer shower has thermostatic controls which prevents being from people scalded by sensing the change in water temperature and automatically rectify the problem. The very latest thermostatically controlled showers also have built in detectors which will automatically turn the off if a failure in water flow is detected, along will regulated controls to prevent people from turning the temperature control too high which could potentially lead to them being burnt or scalded by the water.
The distinct advantages to these types of showers is that they can easily be fitted to existing water pipes as well as being easy to install by having the pipes hidden or exposed. The other great advantage is that you can have a this type of shower which is a power shower.
Power showers:
These are mixer showers which have an integral pump which increase the flow of water from the shower head. These types of showers can only be used if you have low water pressure and tank fed water system, along with both a hot and cold water supply which is above the unit. Power showers are the ideal solution in homes where water pressure is low.
