Popular Kitchen Wood Floors
No other flooring offers the warmth, beauty, and value of wood. Wood flooring enhances the decor of any room, and provides timeless beauty that will increase in value throughout the years. In fact, in a national survey of real estate agents, 90 percent said that houses with wood flooring sell faster and for higher prices than houses without wood floors. That's money in your pocket!
Q: What sort of flooring is ideal for use in a kitchen? I would truly like to use hardwood floorings.
A: Two different kinds of hardwood floors would be a excellent candidate in a kitchen:
1) engineered and site-finished
2) solid and unfinished (may require the installation of a plywood sub-floor)
Let's check out the important differences among the two. Engineered floors may make the total floor very thin since they can be glued straight to a concrete slab or any other rigid sub-floor. A solid floor needs to be nailed into something, so there's usually a need to install a plywood subfloor before the solid floor can be installed. Note that the majority of kitchens in the North Texas area are located on the first floor of a home built on a concrete foundation but I have noticed exceptions.
Just what makes this worth talking about? Answer: Thickness of the entire floor. Because the thickness of the floor introduces the possibility of issues with cabinetry and appliances, the total thickness of the desired floor should be taken into account. Some kitchens I have encountered will only work with a thinner solution while other kitchens aren't limited in choice. If you're going to remodel your entire kitchen including replacing your cabinetry, counter tops and all, you might have the ability to use any floor you'd like.
Here's some situations that I've seen as a designer/flooring advisor:
Fridge: If you have a built in fridge, always check to see if you have 1.25 inches of clearance on top it. Most don't have the clearance. Do not block in your refrigerator.
Dishwashers: These are normally sitting directly on the floor and don't have the excess room between the top of the appliance and the bottom of your counter top. You'll require a little wiggle room so if it's too tight, then a determination must be made. You could block in a dishwasher which means that servicing it might require a service call from a wood floor technician to remove and reinstall planks.
Range: Some kitchens have cook tops. Quite a few have ranges. If you have got a range, take a look at it and see what it might look like if it were raised and inch and a quarter.
An engineered floor is the ideal choice if you've got any of the above issues. The thickness spread of engineered wood floors is 3/7" to 5/8".
